SCA name: Lady Isabel Westrose (Barony of Ruantallan, Crown Principality of Tir Mara, East Kingdom)

I am a double-major costume studies/history student. I have been doing art since I can remember, and spent 4 years at a specialized art high school before deciding that conceptual art is not my future and heading off to do my bachelor of arts in costume studies and history. I love my program =D I am a Lady in the SCA, and for most of the year I hail from the Barony of Ruantallan in the Kingdom of the East - although I spend my summers in Ealdormere.

I do costume from a lot of different eras, including medieval (12thC and 14thC so far), Tudor, and Victorian. I'm starting to get into 18thC now, too, and I also love steampunk. So there will be a wide variety of stuff on here, as I get around to making things and posting them =)

I love mythology, and I do lots of art drawing from the myths of faerie circles and courts and such, as well as versions of Norse figures and scenes from the Arthurian cycles. I am inspired by people like Brian Froud and Alan Lee, and spend a lot of my time imagining strange new fey beings. I also draw the characters from the novel I've been writing for far too long. =)

I have also pursued wildlife photography since I was very young, and I would never go on a trip without a camera in hand. I will not be posting most of my stuff here, however, as I generally distrust the interwebs and am afraid that people would use it without permission. I work hard to get all my photos, and as much as I would like to share them, the internet is not a safe medium.

School is very busy, so updates will be fairly slow, but I'm hoping to put stuff up here as I finish it; both costume work and regular art.

Favourite Movies
My Fair Lady, Well-done versions of books (eg, City of Ember, The Golden Compass until the last few minutes, LotR), Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, many others...
Favourite TV Shows
The Tudors (despite glaring costume errors), Cities of the Underworld, Merlin (it's so awful that I can relax and not nitpick), random wild animal documentaries...
Favourite Writers
Guy Gavriel Kay, Diana Wynne Jones, Tamora Pierce, Joe Abercrombie, Scott Lynch, Tolkien, Rowling, far too many others to continue.

Batgirl Shoot

0 min read
Finally uploaded those batgirl photos! I'm actually going to be doing another shoot with the same photographer later this month, this time in a studio. Should be awesome! Right now I'm working on a very large early 18th century project for school. I've finished the stays, so I'll post photos of them as soon as I can get some good ones. Sorry for the hiatus; school got really busy last term. Should be more things going up as I finish them this winter and into the spring - I've got some exciting projects lined up!

The List

0 min read
The List, as of right now (not necessarily in order of intended completion) - Batgirl cosplay (Stephanie Brown) for FanExpo in August - 1770s wool and linen stays - 1770s silk quilted petticoat - 1860s cage crinoline - steampunk full-length tulle crinoline - steampunk silk bolero/spencer-type jacket - 15thC leather turnshoes - Add lace to 1890s corset There's probably more, and there are definitely more things that I'm planning but that's what's on my immediate radar (i.e., that I already have materials for).

I just joined Magical's "Finish it in..." group, so here's my goal for this month: finally finish my dark red 1890s corset. I took it apart last month to alter it (it needed a few inches taken out of it) and now it's been sitting there for a few weeks. The actual alterations are done, but it needs new eyelets put in, the binding put back on along the edges, and lace along the top. Then the boning channels need re-flossing. I'm not sure if I'll be able to finish the lace and flossing yet this month, since I have a ton of papers and school sewing projects to do, but I'm going to try! =)
