This is a long-overdue upload of my Artemis - Young Justice cosplay. I made it for Toronto's Fan Expo at the end of this past summer, and then wore it for Halifax's Hal-Con this fall as well.
I am actually a recurve archer, and you can see my bow in the bottom right photo - it's a Hoyt Eclipse riser with Winstorm limbs, and it's my precious. I know Artemis is a compound archer, but my bow is pretty epic, so I went with it
This one was fun because I got to use my real hair (no wig, yay!) and my own archery equipment - the bow and the quiver. The arrows are NOT real - they are pieces of wood dowel that were spray-painted black. I cut a green plastic duotang into flights and used electrical tape to attach them to the dowel shafts. They looked really good, but I did have to periodically re-tape the plastic flights. Next time I'll use a glue gun...
The costume is made of a dark green brushed cotton twill and a lighter green jersey (a nice type of stretch fabric). I drafted the patterns myself, and sewed everything in the space of about 3 weeks. The arrow symbol is actually set into the top - it's not appliqued on top of the fabric, but is its own pattern piece. The mask is attached to the top through a neck seam, and the whole thing zips up with a separating zipper at the back. That way, I can unzip it part way to pull down the mask when it gets too annoying
A lot of people have asked how I went about drafting the mask pattern, and the truth is that I cheated. I wrapped my head in saran wrap (I didn't cover my nose - breathing is good!) and then layered myself in duct tape. I drew the mask on the duct tape with a sharpie, cut the whole thing off (without cutting my hair!) and flattened it to get the pattern.
This was the first time I'd ever tried patterning pants, and it was a lot of trial and error. There are definitely things I'd change about them if I did them again, but they worked well enough that I was able to wear them for two cons in a row, so I'd call them a success. The top was easy - just princess seams and a CB zipper. The hardest part was setting in the arrow design.
Overall, this was a very fun costume to wear, and was pretty easy to gather the supplies for. I really like the character, and I had tons of fun meeting up with other Young Justice and DC Universe cosplayers at Fan Expo and Hal-Con!
